BTS Wins ‘Daesang Sweep’ at 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards for Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, BTS swept all four Daesangs at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Hosted by Song Joong Ki, the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards took place on December 6 without an audience due to COVID-19 restrictions.

BTS won a total of eight awards, including the four Daesangs (Album of the Year for “Map of the Soul: 7”, Song of the Year for “Dynamite”, World Icon of the Year and Artist of the Year) and Best Male Group, Best Performance – Male Group (“Dynamite”), Best Music Video (“Dynamite”), and Top 10 Fan Choice in the World. IU’s “Eight,” which was produced by and stars BTS’s Suga, also won Best Collaboration.

In his speech for Album of the Year, presented by James Corden, Jimin said, “Thank you! There are people who may not know it, but Suga is recovering from shoulder surgery. But because we got such a big prize, he made a surprise appearance tonight.

During a phone call on stage, Suga said, “I’m watching the ceremony live. I want to thank ARMY, who awarded us the album of the year award. This is the second year in a row that we have received the album of the year award. It’s for the album that got the most love this year, right? We worked hard to get this album ready in the US and more, so we’re grateful that it got so much love. I’m happy to know that we won album of the year. I’m working hard on my recovery so don’t worry. A lot of people I know text me saying they’re having fun watching MAMA, but it feels weird because I’m not there. It’s a little embarrassing to say that, but I’m with you all in spirit. Thank you. ARMY, I love you.

In his speech for the Global Icon of the Year, which was presented by Park Seo Joon, RM said in English: “I’m nervous. You can see I’m nervous while wearing a mask. ARMY, can you hear me? First of all, I would like to greet our beautiful Jin from all over the world, and also, I would like to greet our ARMYs from all over the world. All over the world, in your room, in your home. Hope my truth and my mind can be conveyed through this paper thing [his mask]. When we think of “global” I wonder if the world is really big. Sure, it’s big, but in the land of music and love, the world is not that big. It’s really small, actually. Throughout this year, thanks to your love and support, we have been able to feel like you are right next to us and in our minds. We are all connected. Our ARMYs around the world have awarded this award and presented it to us. Hope you can stay safe and we can meet in person and say “I love you”.

In the song of the year speech, which was presented by Song Joong Ki, RM said, “MAMA is the only awards ceremony we weren’t invited to when we debuted. We really wanted to come here, and it was a ceremony we very much wanted, but over time we have received such great rewards here as a result. It is deeply moving for us. “Dynamite” is an opportunity that came to us when we were overwhelmed by these tragic times. We didn’t know he would receive so much love. During those difficult times, there were times when it weighed on us that we were the only ones receiving such good news, and we didn’t feel comfortable with it. Whether as ‘Dynamite’ or as ‘Life Goes On’, through dance and music, could we say that we should plant our feet in the ground where we are standing? Because there are so many people who can’t do the job they used to do anymore, we wondered if we could really say something like this. Ultimately, we are people who dance and sing, so we are both grateful and sorry that people have accepted into their hearts our message that we should have faith in a better future. It’s sad, difficult, and happy to say this, but time will pass, tomorrow will come, and morning will rise. Let’s work hard to live and greet the new morning with a smile. Whether it’s explosive like ‘Dynamite’ or calm like ‘Life Goes On’, we’ll stick our two feet in the ground and work hard as BTS. Thank you for all the love you have shown us.

In his speech for Artist of the Year, which was presented by Lee Jung Jae, J-Hope said, “I am grateful to ARMY for staying with us so late. The weight of this award makes us realize that it is really the end of the year. It is an honor to be able to perform at the end of year ceremonies every year and to receive such great rewards. A lot has changed in the world, but that feeling has not changed. Each year as we take another step forward on our path to growth, the words we say the most are: to our amazing fans. Being able to receive these awards, being able to perform here, is thanks to ARMY. It’s a little embarrassing to say this, but the heroes of this award are the members. We were able to make it through this year thanks to these members and this team. I don’t know if Suga is watching this, but please get well soon and take the stage with us soon. We shine brighter when you are with us.

Jimin added the band’s thanks for their personal staff, the staff at Big Hit Entertainment, as well as their families and friends. Jimin said, “Somehow an entire year has passed. We worked so hard, but I felt like everything was going so fast, and sometimes so slowly, that it’s hard to remember everything. I don’t know how to think about it. It’s complicated and sad and happy and unnerving and there doesn’t seem to be much that’s been left behind, but anyway, it’s over. But we stuck it out, so hopefully next year we can come back here and see each other again. V also added his special thanks to the group’s management team.

Congratulations to BTS! Check out the full list of MAMA 2020 winners here.
