“Mnet Asian Music Awards” Brings Important Changes to Its Award Categories
Mnet Asian Music Awards is making significant changes to its awards processes to recognize the popularity and craftsmanship of K-Pop artists.
The legendary Mnet Asian Music Awards, Where MOM, announced the implementation of a new voting regulation concerning its price categories. Starting this year, the ceremony will follow new rules to better showcase the talent of the artists.
Going forward, Mnet will screen applicants from a pool of artists selected by professional judges based on their contributions and leadership in the development of K-Pop. In his ceremony there will be four daesangs in total which include, Global Icon of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the year.
Expert judges will review all applicants based on the artistry of their work as well as sales success. Panel members are K-Pop professionals from different areas of the industry. The judges will choose the winners for the artist, song and album daesangs.
The objective of the new criteria and of the jury is to create a fairer system of rewards. More precisely, this projection process will combine popularity and art.
During this time, World icon of the year and TOP10 Fan Choice will continue as fan-voted awards, reflecting the voices of K-Pop fans around the world.
Besides, MOM will integrate data from the global streaming platform, Apple Music, to determine the winners. Previously, MOM only used musical data from Gaon Chart for its ratings, however, with the genre’s growing popularity around the world, it is important to accurately reflect the global influence of artists.
In addition, to ensure fairness, MOM will work with an external institution, “Samil PwC”, to select and aggregate data and votes for the music charts.
Pre-voting will take place on November 4 via Apple Music using playlist voting as well as Twitter. It will start after the MOM candidacy announcement. This will determine the candidates for the categories awarded by the fans.
Regarding the changes, Kim Hyunsoo, Head of Content Headquarters at CJ ENM, said: “MOM which has served as the global music hub for K-Pop for 12 years, has changed the division and method of awards to reflect trends in the global music market. To ensure fairness, we will gradually make changes from this year. “
The LAM 2021 The nomination will air on Mnet at 11:00 p.m. KST on November 3.
